Lesson Overview During the lesson, the students will see some notes on punnet squares and how to fill out the squares. They will also learn the meanings of these punnet squares and how to read them. After notes, the students will break up into groups to complete the bikini bottom genetics worksheet. Objectives 1. Students will be able to draw the punnet squares. 2. Students will be able to explain how a punnet square is used and how they can predict traits of future generations. Materials Worksheets Notes
Safety Issues None Instruction Opening I will start class with a few questions. Who here looks like their parents? Does anyone know if you can predict what your children will look like? This will sparks a short discussion on punnet squares and genetics. (10 minutes) Learning Activities I will start with notes on what a punnet square is, genotype and phenotypes, and how to fill out squares. I will take a little longer because my CT said that this is a very important topic. (30 minutes)
Next, I will hand out a worksheet on “bikini bottom genetics.” I will have the students work in groups of 4 to complete the worksheet. (20 minutes)
After completion, I will discuss the answers to the worksheet. (10 minutes) Closing Students will be reminded that they have a quiz coming up the next class on mitosis, meiosis, and punnet squares. They will be reminded to study from the worksheets given in class as well as the book. (5 min) Assessment The worksheet will assess their knowledge of punnet squares. Homework Students will study for the quiz on mitosis, meiosis and punnet squares. Additional Notes
